COSTA RICA NEWS – While the rest of the country is dry, enjoying the effects of the “veranillo de San Juan” (a break in the rainy season or indian summer), the residents of the province of Limón are distressed because of the constant flooding from the rains that began Wednesday throughout the Caribbean Coast.
The areas most affected are of Guácimo, Pococí, Siquirres and Matina.
Some flooding was also reported in the area of Turrialba, in the province of Cartago.
The flooding is caused by the overflow of rivers and canals in the low lying areas of Limón province, where dozens of homes and secondary roads were under water.
Heavy swells on the coast have been reported, which can lead to further flooding.
The Instituto Meteorológico Nacional (IMN) – national weather service – explained that the heavy rains are due to the high pressure system in the Caribbean Sea, generating strong winds that carry clouds, which in turn brings the rain.
For the time being the Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE) – national emergency commission – is maintaining a “green” alert, which requires all communities to take preventive measures and be prepared for evacuations.
