Are these the last days of the nightmare know as the ‘platina’? We can only hope.

Monday (May 22) could be the day when the Alfredo González Flores, best known as the ‘Platina‘ bridge will be finished, ending the nightmare that plagues almost 100,000 drivers daily that use the autopista General Cañas.

Monday or some other day next week is the expected delivery date of the last promise made last month by the Minister of Obras Publicas y Transportes (MOPT), Carlos Villalta.

Originally, the bridge work was to have been finished by the end of February. However, delays after delays have kept the nightmare going for thousands of drivers who cross the bridge daily and the thousands of others affected by the congestion, direct and indirect, caused by the bridge in the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) of San Jose.

The bridge has been a thorn for drivers since 2009 when the first serious fault was detected, Last year, President Luis Guillermo Solis promised to complete the bridge during his term,  a promise that he intended to keep, unlike the promises made by his predecessaors (Laura Chinchilla and Oscar Arias) who did not.

Minister Villalta assures us that all six lanes of the bridge will be open next week, the third week in May as promised. However, he did not say the exact day.

We can only wait.

Oh, and don’t forget, in Costa Rica “finished” and “complete” mean different things. Read this to be sure of what we mean.
