COSTA RICA NEWS – President Luis Guillermo Solís on Thursday guaranteed the continuance of the arts and crafts market in downtown San José, with the government officially giving the use of the public street to the artisans.

The declaration allows artisans a dignified and appropriate place to showcase their work without interruption of vehicular or pedestrian traffic.

The market has unofficially occupied a part of Calle 13 bis for the past two decades. Being a public street, many of the vendors dedicated to producing and showcasing their work have suffered harassment from the public and city officials.

“We lifted the veto of Le 16377 to assign the use of Calle 13bis of San José. This spaces is now yours, of our culture and family entrepreneurship,” said Solís.

The economy of this market supports about 200 families.
