QCOSTARICA – If you own a Nissan, Hyundai or Toyota vehicle and it is Saturday, keep a close eye on your it for these are prefered brands and preferred day for criminals to steal them.

According to statistics by the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ), Saturdays from 6:00pm to 9:00pm is the time period with the most vehicle theft, and the areas of Alajuela centre, San Pedro Montes de Oca and Guapiles (Pococi, Limon) had the highest incidences.

The OIJ data also shows that 60% of the vehicles were stolen from a public road, mostly due to owner carelessness, like leaving the car open, and even with keys in the ignition.

Walter Espinoza, director of the OIJ said that in general, vehicle theft in the country “is very similar to 2014”.

Other data in the OIJ report shows 2002 to 2010 models are the most stolen, dismantled and sold for parts; late models, are shipped out of the country.
