COSTA RICA EXTRA – President Luis Guillermo Solis was surprised yesterday with a birthday cake while attending the closing event of the Semana Nacional del Cooperativismo, at the Dos Pinos plant, in Coyol de Alajuela.

To the surprise of everyone, the Prez also took to the microphone to belt out the tune “Sigo siendo el rey” (I’m still the king).

Attending the event were 250 cooperative leaders, that included Alberto Argüello, the president of Dos Pinos, a cooperative that includes 1,400 partners (co-owners), employs 3,500 people in 14 countries and contributes 1.7% to Costa Rica Gross Domestic Production (Producto Interno Bruto in Spanish).

During the event, the birthday celebration, singing and cake eating, the Solis avoided commenting on the proposed changes in taxes recommended by the Ministry of Finance (Ministerio de Hacienda) and directly related to cooperatives.

On his Facebook page, President Solis “Un año más de vida ” (one more year).

“I appreciate very much the surprise of these young cooperatives today in Alajuela, sharing their good vibes and this delicious birthday cake.”

Solis celebrated his 57th birthday.
