(QCOSTARICA) In a pilot project, the supermarket chain AutoMercado will be using paper to wrap cheese and cold cut purchases at its meat counters, in place of traditional plastic wrap.
The Guachipelin (Escazu) and Moravia stores will be the first two in the project, with the hope of expanding to other branches based on customer acceptance.
Coordinator of Social Corporate Responsibility at AutoMercado, Silvia Perez, said the paper used is from verified reforestation.
The company also stopped packaging chicken in styrofoam containers and now uses vacuum plastic.
“We want to reduce the use fo styrofoam, which is quite a challenge in the sector. One alternative is vacuum packing, guaranteeing product safety and longer lasting,” said Perez.
Vacuum packing is already in use at the company’s 10 Vindi convenience stores across the country.
