(QCOSTARICA) As promised, taxi drivers from all over the Central Valley gathered in the area of La Sabana park, to start their 8:00am protest that includes blocking important routes, in particular the Ruta 27 in the area of Guachupelin, Escazu where the offices of the regulatory agency is located.

In Grecia, Naranjo, Alajuela, Cartago, Guapiles, Siquirres and Limon are some of the areas also to be greatly affected by the protest.

In the San Jose area, the autopista General Cañas and the Florencio del Castillo (San Jose – Cartago) are expected to have “tortuguismo”, taxi vehicles moving at a snail’s pace.

The taxi drivers are demanding that the Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (Aresep) change the method in calculating taxi fares and include such costs as vehicle maintenance (oil changes, tire replacement, etc.), the cost of gasoline, insurance, among others.

The Policía de Tránsito (traffic police) is attempting to maintain order, with officers at key points along the Ruta 27, 32 and international airport.
