COSTA RICA BUSINESS NEWS – The Directorate General of Taxation (taxman) informs the closure of 16 businesses in Alajuela, Heredia, San Carlos and San Ramón for breach of tax obligations.

The closure is for five days in accordance to the Código de Normas y Procedimientos Tributarios (Tax Code) and will be allowed to re-open only if the irregularities have been corrected (ie. paid their taxes).

Of the sixteen closures, six are located in the city of Alajuela, five in Heredia, three San Carlos and two in San Ramon. For a list of the businesses affected, go to http://www.hacienda.go.cr/

Carlos Vargas, head of taxation, said typically there are three reasons for the closure of a business: late payments of the sales tax, filing tax declarations late and not filing invoices/receipts.

If you own a business in Costa Rica, be it a small enterprise or self employed, it is recommended consulting a certified public accountant of your tax obligations and payments.
