Q COSTA RICA — The Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT) — Ministry of Public Works and Transportation – published a notice on its official platforms reminding drivers of the vehicle requirements for road use.
According to the official information, the requirements are:
- Speedometer in km/h.
- Lights in good condition: High beams, low beams, brake lights, reverse lights, turn signals, and hazard lights.
- Windshield wipers: They must function perfectly and never create visual obstructions.
- Front and rear windshields.
- Front and rear bumpers.
- If you were in an accident and your windshield was damaged, you shouldn’t drive until you buy or have a new one imported. The same applies to the bumper.
- Steering wheel: It should be located on the left or in the center of the passenger compartment.
- Seat belts must be three-point seat belts.
- Brakes and parking brake.
- Rearview mirrors.
- Horn: It must emit a clear and audible sound within the permitted decibel levels.
- Muffler: Essential for controlling and reducing the emission of noise and gases.
Additional Safety and Traffic Elements:
Besides the vehicle’s physical condition, remember to always carry up-to-date documentation, including your ID, valid driver’s license, and vehicle registration sticker.
It is also mandatory to carry emergency equipment such as a charged fire extinguisher, warning triangles or flares, and tire-changing tools.
Obligations of the MOPT
Though not a driver/vehicle owner responsibility, the MOPT should consider certain road features key to driving safely. Things like lane markings, lighting, and signage, among others. It’s frustrating—and dangerous—when you’re driving along and your lane just vanishes without warning.
