At 6pm the polling stations around the country closed their doors to start with the count, with results starting to be available starting at 8pm, according to the Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (TSE).

The voting today was without incident.

Voter turnout was higher than expected, polling stations reporting higher turn outs in the afternoon, with many Costa Ricans leaving the voting to the last minute.

Officials of the TSE say they received a number of complaints, all minor incidents, but no “amparos” (appeals ) were filed, a right that any citizen can file if he or she feels their right to vote have been violated.

Gustavo Román, spokesperson for the TSE, says that the only person to come to the TSE offices was presidential candidate, José Miguel Corrales, complaining about the mayor of the town of Grecia who arrived to vote in the company of a Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) organizer.
