Lady Laura will be here to vote on Sunday, February 2, 2014 and just having her in the country at all scares me a little. She might very well be in her office on Monday and that scares me even more.

Well, how much damage can she and her ministers/staff and the deputies do in three months and four days?

A lot!

With any luck at she will hitch rides on more airplanes, travel more on the Tico colon, purchase some inaugural clothes, host a going away party or two and start to write her memoirs for Costa Rica fans.

Whatever she and her administration decide, I hope it does not include acting like a president. That usually ends up as a scandal of some sort or, an embarrassment such as her signature at the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) conference honoring the fallen leader and full time thug of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez.

Attending CELAC in Cuba and while she is or supposedly is not left leaning but rather a neoliberal center right, she is catching the Latin America popularity wave which is to elect country leaders of the far left. Leave it to Costa Rica and Chinchilla to spend four years as a right of center president making all sorts of weird trade deals, offering companies far and wide tax free status if they invest in our little country, campaign for almost six months to raise taxes on the locals as well as foreigners, run up a record deficit, cozy up to China, expand the government….hell maybe she is an out-of-the closet socialist?

Actually, of all 13 candidates running for president, only one, Otto Guevara is a “rightist” and he has conveniently found Christianity to guide himself and more importantly, attract the almost 30% of undecided voters. Most people believe Johnny Araya is center-right, a neoliberal but he is not. He is left of center and clearly a liberal for many, many years.

However, I fear if Laura Chinchilla is a born again leftist, the next four months will be filled not only with ribbon cutting ceremonies on yet to be built projects ala Oscar Arias, but handing out raises to government employees, pumping up a beleaguered and broke government, and not giving a (Expletive) about the country’s future. And I can see her point because it seems most people in Costa Rica don’t much give a (Same Expletive) about her anymore and have spent years degrading this woman no matter what she does.

No, Laura should just take off her ten-speed wedgies, kick back, let the deputies steal what they can and shut down the den of incompetency and embarrassment.
