QCOSTARICA — During Semana Santa (Holy Week) with increased visits to hotels as well as public tourist sites, it is essential that tourists take additional measures to protect their safety online.

Avoid accessing sensitive accounts on public computers and regularly track your banking and credit card transactions for suspicious activity is the advice for tourists while in vacation in Costa Rica

For this reason, experts in cybersecurity make a series of practical tips to avoid being a victim of fraud or cyber-attacks, and guarantee digital security during these holidays:

  • Update all your devices: Keep the software on your devices, including computers, smartphones, and tablets, up to date to ensure you have the latest security fixes.
  • Use a secure connection: Prefer secure Wi-Fi networks and avoid connecting to public or open networks, as they may be susceptible to hacker attacks.
  • Set up two-factor authentication (2FA): Add an extra layer of security to your accounts by setting up two-factor authentication whenever possible.
  • Back up your data: Make regular backups of your important data to an external device or the cloud to protect it against loss or ransomware attacks.
  • Take care of your devices: Keep your devices physically safe and avoid leaving them unattended in public places where they can be stolen or compromised.
  • Avoid accessing sensitive accounts on public computers: Do not access bank accounts, emails, or other sensitive accounts from public computers or shared devices, as they may be vulnerable to malware or security compromises.
  • Monitor your bank accounts and cards: Regularly track your banking and credit card transactions for suspicious activity. Notify your bank immediately if you notice any abnormalities.
  • Disable automatic connections: Disable automatic connections to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth networks on your devices to prevent unwanted connections and protect against potential attacks.
  • Be cautious with emails and messages: Do not click on links or download attachments from suspicious emails, as these could be phishing attempts to steal personal or financial information.
  • Notify your service provider: If you will be away for an extended period, inform your banking and card service provider so they can be alert for any unusual activity on your accounts.

By following these cybersecurity tips, you can enjoy a worry-free holiday, knowing that you have taken steps to protect your personal and financial information.
