Francisco Segura says he wants to get rid of the "undesirables" but the system does not permit him.
Francisco Segura will be retiring on June 26, after three years on the job as the country’s director of the OIJ.

(QCOSTARICA) Friday, June 26, will be the last day for Francisco Segura, the Head the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) – Costa Rica’s investigative police unit akin to the FBI in the United States.

Segura three years ago replaced Jorge Rojas.

According to the Attorney General (Fiscal General), Jorge Chavarría, the change in the leadership of the OIJ comes at a time when crime in the country has become more violent.

For Chavarria and others, the next director must have knowledge of both national and international crime, in particular of organized crime and money laundering.

The candidates for the “top cop” spot will be going through a selection process, that according to the Ministerio Publico, should result in the appointment of a new director within less than four months.

It is unclear at this time who lead the OIJ during the transition.
