QCOSTARICA – The Nutrition Service at the Hospital Mexico says it detected worms and weevils in a recent batch of rice sold to the institution to feed employees and patients, hospital administrator, Vilma Campos Gómez, told La Nacion.
Campos said the product was never used because the contamination was detected early by controls and returned to the supplier.
The official said they met with the supplier of the ‘worm and weevil rice’.
What is disturbing is that according to Cesar Quesada, the manager company in charge of supplier bids, Mercasa, who says “pests in staple grains are almost inherent … what prevails here are the prevention and control processes to prevent these become part of the final product.”
According to Campos, this is the first time the hospital has had problems with the supplier, who has been supplying the hospital for the last four years.
Campos said that of the 60 bags delivered Monday, only one had no bugs.
According to the national rice cooperative, Coopearroz, if stored correctly the product (rice) should not be filled with bugs.
