5.4 Quake Shakes Costa Rica

The Tuesday afternoon quake occurred in the northern zone of San Carlos

A 5.4 magnitude earthquake shook Venecia de San Carlos in Costa Rica’s northern zone. The tremor that hit at 3:14 pm was felt through most of the country.

The Red Simologica Nacional (RSN) – National Seismological Network – reported the epicenter 48 kilometers northwest of San José

The Observatorio Vulcanologico y Sismologico de Costa Rica (OVSICORI) – Costa Rican Volcanological and Seismological Observatory – reported the quake a 5.1 magnitude, its epicenter 9 kilometers west of Rio Cautro.

The Comision Nacional de Emergencias (CNE) – National Emergency Commission – did not report any damages or people affected.

“Costa Rica is a highly seismic country,” CNE posted after Tuesday’s quake. “That’s why Costa Rica prepares.”
