The relevant commissions of the Mexican Senate have initially passed a draft to reform the Constitution and prohibit children under 15 from working. The draft also establishes that children aged 15 and under 16 would be able only to work a maximum of 6 hours.
With that measure the Mexican government is intending to meet international agreements signed by this country to protect children and eliminate child labor, said today La Jornada newspaper.
The draft will be discussed and voted in next Monday session, once lawmakers return from Holy Week holidays.
According to the report on child labor carried out by the National Occupation and Employment Survey there are 3.6 million children and teenagers, aged between five and 17, performing some kind of labor, something that represents 12.5 percent of that age population.
