COSTA RICA SPORTS NEWS – Costa Rica may have a caught a break yesterday, at the expense of the Italians who lost Riccardo Montolivo, from World Cup play in Brazil.
Playing in a friendly with Ireland, Italy the four time world champion could only draw a 0-0 tie. And it was during this game that Montolivo fractured a tibia when he came into contact with Alex Pearce and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher.
It is certainly a serious setback for the Azzurri.
“Montolivo suffered what I feared, a fractured tibia. I have not yet seen the x-ray to assess the severity, but with this type of fracture surgery is a must,” said Dr. Enrico Castellacci. All countries are required to submit their 23 player squad list by tomorrow but Prandelli may take two other players with him in order to avail of the Fifa regulation which allows for an injury-enforced squad change, up to 24 hours before a team’s opening game. Italy start against England in Group D on June 14th.
Costa Rica and Italy only play one game against each other, on June 20 at 1:00pm local time.
