COSTA RICA SPORTS – It’s official, Costa Rica’s national team (La Selección or La Sele in familiar Tico terms) ranked number 13 in the world, ahead of such usual powerhouses as Chile and Britain, and right behind Italy.
Within the CONCACAF group of teams, La Sele, which stunned the soccer world in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, is 13 places ahead of Mexico. It is also far ahead of another CONCACAF rival, the United States, which is stuck 18 places behind Costa Rica at 31; Panama is ranked 61; Trinidad y Tobago, 61; and Honduras is last, ranked 77.
Number one, of course, is world champion Germany, followed by Argentina.
Not content to rest on their World Cup laurels, the post-World Cup play has been an unbroken string of victories, signalling to all that the stirring performance that caught the world’s eye was no fluke, no inspired combination of a miracle worker coach and adrenalin. (The Colombian coach, Jorge Luis Pinto that took the national team to a record World Cup performance, was fired after the team returned home and euphoria wore off.)
