With the ever-increasing price of gasoline and traffic congestion, motorbikes are becoming ever more popular

Q COSTA RICA – On Monday the Refinadora Costarricense de Petróleo (Recope) made the request for an increase of ¢21 colones for a liter of super, ¢23 for regular and ¢6 for diesel.

Typically the requests are made to the Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (Aresep) – regulator of public prices and services – every second Friday of the month. Due to the Semana Santa holiday, the request was possible the next business day.

Currently, gasoline prices at the pumps are ¢600 for a litre of super, ¢571 for regular and ¢475 for diesel.

The Recope says the price hike is due to a rise in the price of oil on international markets, in response to world conflicts such as Syria, Afghanistan and North Korea. The Recope refinery also cited adjustments in the colon-dollar exchange.

If the hike is approved, it would go into effect at the pumps probably the first week in May.
