Costa Rican filmmaker Pablo Ortega has released on YouTube a full length documentary exploring the financial crisis facing the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS) or Caja, as it is commonly known.

The two hour documentary, a production by the Laboratorio Audiovisual de Documentalismo Investigativo (LAUDI) of the Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR), narrates the decisions made by CCSS officials through the years, resulting in a state of emergency beginning in 2011.

La Caja de Pandora (Pandora’s Box) was available on YouTube on Wednesday.

Ortega has also produce feature films like “Costa Rica SA” and “El Oro de lo Tontos” (Fools Gold).

According to the filmmaker, the documentary explores the “hidden game” within the institution, triggered by the declines of its finances.

Ortega said that most Costa Ricans are unaware of the situation surrounding the Caja and especially that a good health system could be completed ruined by mismanagement.

The documentary uses press inquiries, fielwold and LAUDI interviews with former and current officials of the CCSS to present its story.
