An increase in the disease — a form of brain damage — has been blamed on the Zika virus.

(Prensa Latina) Mexico records 80 confirmed cases of infection for the zika virus, transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, and six of them are pregnant women, it was known today.

Most cases are registered in two states in southeastern Mexico, Chiapas and Oaxaca, with 45 and 25 people, respectively, said the General Directorate of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health in a statement.

Regarding the cases of pregnant women, four are recorded in Chiapas, one in Oaxaca and another in the state of Veracruz, also in the southeast. The report includes cases confirmed until February 12.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the zika virus as a global health emergency and considered that could affect up to four million people in America.
