A look back to August 1987, when the “Plan de Paz para Centroamérica” (Central America peace plan) was penned. In the photo taken 27 years ago we see ayoung Oscar Arias (second from the right in red shirt) and Daniel Ortega (to the far left in the blue jacket), two personalities that still influence politics in the region today, among other Central American leaders of the time.

Next to Ortega is Jose Azcona del Hoyo, president of Honduras. On the far right is Jose Napoleon Duarte, president of El Salvador. The man in the middle is Marco Vinicio Cerezo Arevalo, president of Guatemala.
Those five were the parties to the agreement engineered by Arias, who essentially locked all of them in a hotel room and refused to allow a break until they came up with an agreement.
