In the latest poll results by Unimer for La Nacion, Johnny Araya maintains a clear lead over his rivals for the presidential chair that will be emptied by Laura Chinchilla in May 2014.
Araya, presidential candidate for the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) – also known as the “verdiblanco” (green white) party – has the support of 27.5% of the 1.206 people polled between September 6 and 12.
The former mayor of San José has not lost support since since the beginning of the year, though he has not gained either. In February the polls put Johnny at a 27% favourite and 26% in June, when he stepped down as San José mayor to run full time in the presidential campaign.
According to the Unimer poll, Rodolfo Hernandez Gomez, former director of Children’s Hospital and the candidate of the Partido Unidad Soical Cristiana (PUSC), is in second place with an approval rate of 10.6%, a remarkable difference.
Given that the poll has an error margin of 2.8 points, Hernandez’s support is really much lower. Or could be a little higher, still with a large gap from first place.
Following Hernandez in the polls is Otto Guevara Guth with a 4.1% acceptance. Guevara is the front man and founder of the Movimiento Libertario (ML). This will be his fourth consecutive run for Casa Presiencial, losing in 2002, 2006 an 2010.
Next in the polls is legislator José María Villalta, with a 2.2% approval. Villalta is heading up the Frente Amplio party.
Following is Luis Guillermo Solís, heading the Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC) candidate, with 2%.
The PAC, under Ottón Solís, made a strong showing in the last two elections, in fact today is the second largest party in the Legislative Assembly.
José Miguel Corrales of the Patria Nueva party, withdrew his candidacy on Sunday evening and thus is not mentioned in the poll report.
