Only 1.2% of all Interent connections in the country are 10 Mbps and above. The average is 3.4 Mbps, well below the world average of 5.6 Mbps.

QCOSTARICA – Not surprising, Costa Rica finished 2015 among the 40 countries with the worst internet Internet connection speeds, this according to the latest global report by Akamai Technologies.

According to Akamai’s State of the Internet Report, Costa Rica had a significant drop in ranking, dropping from position 94 in 2014 to 102 in 2015.

Costa Rica finished 2015 with an average fixed Internet connection speed of 3.4 Mbps, significantly below the world average of 5.6 Mbps.

The report also indicates a slow growth in regards of broadband Internet in the country, where only 23% of the connections have a speed equal to or greater than 4 Mbps.

Around the world, the average connections at 4 Mbps is 69%. In Latin America, like Chile and Mexico, the connections that meet or exceed that speed is 65%.

In addition, connections in the country that exceed 10 Mbps represents only 1.2% of all connections. Costa Rica did not rank in the Akamia statistics for connections greater 20 Mbps.

According to NIC Costa Rica, the local domain registry maintained by the Academia Nacional de Ciencias, since 2002, Costa Rica has gone from being among the top in the world in broadband Internet connections to one of the worst, below underdeveloped countries, in less that 15 years.

This represents a disadvantage for the country’s national development and competitiveness, according to the NIC Costa Rica.

“The Internet is an essential service for the growth of industry, education and health system. With so little competitive Internet connections, the country risks delaying economic growth and human development,” stresses the NIC.
