QCOSTARICA – Nicaragua’s First Lady, Rosario Murillo, said in a press release that Nicaragua and Costa Rica should reestablish dialogue following the International Court of Justice (ICJ) decision Wednesday.
The comment was made on the government website El19digital.com.
Murillo, who is also the coordinator of the Nicaraguan Council of Communication and Citizenship assures that they will respect the Court ruling.
“Nicaragua and Costa Rica must prepare to restore dialogue and mechanisms of coexistence that allows us to ensure respect, tranquility, and peace, in the corresponding relationship between the Central American people,” said the statement read by the First Lady.
In her statement, Murillo also mentions that the Court reaffirms Nicaragua’s sovereignty over the San Juan river.
“For Nicaragua, for the Nicaraguan people, of utmost importance is that the International Court of Justice has recognized the full right of our country, for our dredging San Juan river,” she says.
In the ICJ ruling Wednesday, recognized was Costa Rica’s of the Isla Calero, an area in the northeast of the province of Limon.
The dispute culminated five years of debate between the two countries when in 2010 it was discovered that Nicaraguan soldiers were dredging the area they claimed part of their territory. The border between to countries has always been the San Juan river, the river belonging to Nicaragua while Costa Rica had nagivational rights. The Nicaraguans claimed that river had changed its course over the years, that the disputed area was actually part of their territory.
