QCOSTARICA – The Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) confirmed the death of Romanian national Costel Comana, whose body was found in the lavatory of an Avianca flight arriving in Costa Rica, as by asphyxia by hanging.
Following the news, it was learned that Comana was a railway entrepreneur in his country, who was involved in alleged corruption and bribery.
According to Spynews.ro, Comana’s partner, Iorgu Ganea was arrested days earlier on charges of bribery of Ministry of Transport officials, in exchange for favours for their company, Regiotrans. Romanian National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) authorities had also arrested Estrella Stefanescu, a Ministry of Transport official.
Apparently Comana had cooperated with prosecutors in exchange for his freedom.
Spynews says Regiotrans had received numerous contracts for the maintenance of unprofitable state railways routes.
Comana was listed as one of the top 300 richest in his country.
The man was discovered to have taken his life on an Avianca flight from Bogota, Colombia, arriving in San José, Costa Rica at 9:05am Wednesday morning.
