QCOSTARICA – The behavior of the Turrialba volcano this past week is the trigger of a magmatic eruption of low magnitude but of great economic consequences for the Central Valley, said pn Friday volcanologist National Seismological Network (Red Sismológica Nacional – RSN), Guillermo Alvarado.

The most drastic scenario would be the spewing of incandescent rocks that fall within 5 kilometers of the volcano and a displacement of ash up to 80 kilometers to the southwest of the colossus, reaching the Central Valley that will affect livestock, tourism, agriculture, and damage to the electrical grid and telecommunications networks, said the expert.

According to the RSN, the magma is currently at a depth of one kilometer. This means that in less than five months, since the volcano became active last October, it has moved up about four kilometers.

Meanwhile, RSN volcanologist Mauricio Mora explained the”scenarios” are forecasts based on the reports of the volcanic activity collected since October last year.

The expert said this is not to alarm the population, but to be alert to an imminent eruption of the volcano. Mora, who was in the volcano on Friday, said it is not possible to predict the eruption.

The volcanologist said that the expulsion of ash last Thursday was similar to what occurred in October, however weather conditions (wind gusts of up to 70 kilometers per hour) spread the ash over a wide area.

The columns of ash from the six eruptions on Thursday and Friday reached a height of between one thousand and three thousand meters (one to three kilometers).
