QCOSTARICA – The recent expulsion of gases, ash and rocks by the Turrialba volcano are signs that the colossus is preparing for a “major eruption”, said on Tuesday, Gino Gonzalez, geologist at the University of Costa Rica (UCR),

The scientist said that the situation is not to panic, but yes we have to be informed and prepared.

The geologist explained that we can expect a similar eruption 150 years ago in which there was much ash .

The Turrialba last erupted Tuesday at 2:07 am.

Ash and the smell of sulfur reached different parts of the Central Valley, and as far north as Cuidad Quesada in San Carlos.

According to Raul Mora, volcanologist at the Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica de la Universidad Nacional (Ovsicori), ash reached a height that was pushed north by the winds.

The Tuesday eruption reached a height of 2000 meters (2 kilometers or 1.25 miles) over the top of the volcano.
