New models, better financing conditions and increased imports of used vehicles would boost the sale of electric vehicles next year in Costa Rica.

Danissa began marketing the Nissan Leaf model in October and opened a charging station at its dealership in La Sabana.

Danissa, Grupo Q, BMW and Laudreni Auto dedicated to marketing electric vehicles, estimate that between 2019 and 2020 their combined sales will increase by 45%, from 342 to 497 units.

Alesandro Di Palma, director of marketing at BMW said that “… year after year they notice an increase in the number of people interested in the i3 model, which is reflected in the fact that 20% of the total requests for information they receive are about that vehicle.”

Eric Orlich, president of the Asociación Costarricense de Movilidad Eléctrica (Asomove) – Costa Rican Association of Electric Mobility, stressed that more and more people are interested in acquiring an electric vehicle.

“New brands are arriving, with cheaper models and greater variety (…). In the coming days BYD will be presenting three new models and Vetrasa with JAC, we also see more importers of used cars,” added Orlich.

In the case of Laudreni Auto – Autos Santa Elena has more than 10 used models of brands such as Nissan, Chevrolet, Ford, Fiat, Kia and BMW in a price range from US$15,000 to $US39,000.

The company expects to sell between 25 or 30 units during this year, and a similar figure next year.

Finally, Grupo Q that markets the Hyundai brand in Costa Rica expects to end the year with the sale of 140 units of the Ioniq model (69 of them sold in the first eight months) and, although they are optimistic, they won’t say how many such vehicles they expect to sell in 2020. The Ioniq has a range of 373 km and is sold for a price of US$38,900.
