The Fiscalía Adjunta de Asuntos de Género (Deputy Prosecutor for Gender Affairs) accused the mother of a girl who was sexually exploited by a two brothers in Desamparados.
According to the authorities, she knew about the attacks and still allowed them to continue for 5 years.
The case is related to more than 300 videos of child pornography, which were investigated in Australia, New Zealand and France by the International Police (Interpol) that determined that the victim was a 9-year-old girl who lived in Costa Rica.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the two brothers with surnames Rojas Retana sexually assaulted the girl on several occasions jointly and separately.
They face charges for the crimes of rape, sexual abuse, assault with a weapon, corruption of a minor; besides production, reproduction and possession of child pornography.
As for the mother of the victim, surnamed Valverde, authorities consider that “apparently, she had knowledge of what was happening and, even so, she allowed the young girl to be alone with accused”.
“Valverde is accused of committing the alleged crimes of corruption of a minor and breach of parental rights,” the Public Ministry said.
The abuse occurred between 2012 and 2017, in San Miguel de Desamparados.
Atrocious case
The case goes back to May 23, 2017. After an investigation by Interpol and in coordination with the Organismo de Investigacion Judicial (OIJ), the exact location was traced and the young girl rescued.
In the investigation, a photo of the young girl with the logo of a school in Costa Rica was found.
The two brothers have been in preventive detention (remand) since their arrest in 2017. Authorities learned that one of the brothers had computer skills and is believed to have distributed the videos. He was a friend of the family and lived with the victim and her parents. The other brother lived five blocks away.
