The Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE) – National Emergency Commission – is calling on residents, visitors and the general public to respect, for safety measures, the five kilometre perimeter around the Turrialba volcano.

In the early morning of Tuesday the volcano has been experiencing up to five eruptions per hour.

Walter Fonseca, head of operations at the CNE, said the local committee met this morning and decided to completely close passage in the area of La Central.

At this time the CNE has not issued an evacuation of the animals.

Schools in the area of El Volcán, La Reunión, Sitio Las abras, Las Virtudes and La Pastora were closed this Tuesday morning.

The Observatorio Vulcanológico de Costa Rica de la Universidad Nacional (Ovsicori-UNA) and the Red Sismológica Nacional de la Universidad de Costa Rica (RSN) report constant seismic activity from the colossus, increasing in frequency since Sunday when at least 30 eruptions were recorded.

Monday morning, at 5:13am, the volcano had an eruption lasting 3 minutes. Ash was reported perceived in La Pastora and Santa Cruz de Turrialba.

Guillermo Alvarado volcanologist at the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) explained that the Turrialba has been active for last 16 years of activity and currently there is magma near the surface, that can be released, or stay inside the volcano.
